And this brings up an important point: the whole idea behind the Kompakt is to simplify and reduce digital distraction. Installing popular messaging apps seems counterproductive to this goal. Yet, Mudita does acknowledge the realities of modern life, allowing sideloading if absolutely necessary. Personally, I don't miss WhatsApp on this device. But the music situation did make me think. The included music player works perfectly well, but you need to manually upload your music files. Given that most of us have moved away from owning music files—remember CDs and MP3s?—a streaming option would be handy. Perhaps sideloading Spotify might be the middle ground here.

Real-Life Use: Is This Phone Practical?

For daily use, the Kompakt excels in scenarios where less is genuinely more. During my two weeks with the phone, I found myself becoming less distracted. Without the constant buzz of notifications, I felt calmer and more focused. Calls are clear, and SMS works reliably. The e-ink screen is gentle on the eyes, making it particularly enjoyable for reading short texts or checking simple information like the weather.

But if you're genuinely looking to disconnect, reclaim your time, and find a balance between staying reachable and reducing screen addiction, this phone offers perhaps the best minimalist smartphone experience currently available.
