Every day, I receive products to review, and the quality can be a bit of a mixed bag. But then, there are those amazing surprises where the brand just nails everything—from the packaging to the design and overall performance. The Edifier MP230 Bluetooth speaker is one of those rare finds. I did receive this product for free to review, but rest assured, all opinions shared here are entirely my own.

Design

Edifier MP230 Black

Edifier is a brand I’ve grown to really like over the years. Whether it’s speakers or headphones, they rarely disappoint. The MP230 Bluetooth speaker might just be the cutest speaker I’ve come across. Its retro design is absolutely stunning. Made from MDF wood, it feels warm to the touch—so much nicer than cold plastic—and this material also helps enhance the sound quality. The overall design, inspired by the 1950s and '60s, is a huge win for me. I have the black version, and it looks fantastic in any setting.

The speaker grill is covered with a lovely fabric, featuring the Edifier logo in the top left corner—a small detail that really adds a touch of class. The row of piano-style buttons is another highlight. They're clicky, responsive, and satisfying to use. You’ll find the power button, Bluetooth pairing button, play/pause button, and volume controls neatly arranged. The whole thing weighs about 850g, giving it just the right amount of heft without being too heavy to move around.

specs

This Bluetooth speaker, priced under £100/$100, is all about keeping things simple. With a 2500 mAh high-capacity lithium-ion battery, you’ll get around 9 hours of playtime on a single charge. When it does need charging, you can use the included USB-C cable with any phone charger. It supports Bluetooth 5.0, so the connection is strong and reliable. If you prefer wired connections, there’s an AUX port, and there’s even a micro SD card slot if you want to play music directly from a card.

Inside, it boasts two 10W speakers and two 48 mm full-frequency driver units, which help deliver a surprisingly powerful audio experience.

my experience

From the moment I unboxed it (you can watch my unboxing video at the end of this review), the Edifier MP230 felt like something special. Connecting it via Bluetooth to my iPhone was incredibly easy, and the user-friendly experience didn’t stop there. Once I hit play on Spotify, I was blown away by the sound quality. Up to about 80% volume, the audio is just stunning. Push it to the max, and while there’s a slight drop in quality (as expected with smaller speakers), it still holds up impressively well. The bass is powerful—you can genuinely feel it—and for such a compact and stylish speaker, the volume it delivers is remarkable.

I’ve been using it in my living room while working, and I couldn’t be happier with the sound quality. The buttons are responsive, and the portability is a huge plus for me.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the market for a Bluetooth speaker under £100, I highly recommend the Edifier MP230. The only downside, in my opinion, is the lack of equalizer control through the Edifier Connect app. Hopefully, that’s something they’ll add in the future. But beyond that minor flaw, it’s tough to find anything wrong with this speaker—from the beautiful retro design to the fantastic sound quality, Edifier has really knocked it out of the park. Grab one, and I’m sure you’ll wonder how you lived without it!
